In My Holiday Mug: Christmas Egg Nog

Over the years I have come to realize that everyone has a go-to beverage they like to drink during the holidays.

Personally, I love a good Mudslide. My mom (who is not a drinker) will have a glass of Strawberry Wild Vines, while my dad must have egg nog. In fact, J and I were sent on a wild goose chase last Christmas when I mistakenly asked my dad if he needed anything before we made our way to his house for brunch. Of course egg nog was the only thing he requested, which resulted in J and I visiting three convenience stores in our small town looking for a carton. Lucky for us, we managed to snag the last carton at our local Mac’s. Crisis averted!

I can’t blame the man for wanted egg nog, I mean, it really is the quintessential Christmas drink. It’s festive. It’s cheery. It’s straight up delicious. If you have never had homemade egg nog you are missing out. My first foray into making egg nog at home was last Christmas, and I don’t think I’ve looked at a store-bought carton since! This year I will definitely avoid the egg nog shortage by making my own!

Description

You can add all kinds of flavours to this classic holiday drink. Try grating your own nutmeg, or adding brandy, rum, instant coffee, or even vanilla ice cream to this recipe.

Ingredients

Units Scale

6 eggs
1/3 cup liquid honey or sugar
1/8 tsp salt
4 cups milk (1%), divided
1 tbsp vanilla extract
Disaronno
Coconut whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

1. Whisk eggs, honey and salt in large saucepan. Gradually add 2 cups (500 mL) milk. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until mixture coats back of spoon, 12 to 15 minutes. (Do not let mixture boil.)
2. Pour into large heatproof bowl; stir in remaining milk and vanilla. Place bowl in ice water, stirring frequently, until mixture is cool, about 15 minutes. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.
3. When ready to serve, whisk in flavouring (ie: cinnamon, nutmeg, etc), and add 1 oz of Disaronno. Top with coconut whipped cream if desired.
