Holiday Week: Classic Egg Nog
Here’s a confession… when I was a kid you couldn’t get me to drink egg nog to save my life. Yeah. I hate it. A lot. It’s funny how your tastes evolve as you get older, because now you can’t keep me a way from egg nog! Or maybe it’s the rum…
Either way, every year as December creeps closer I get excited for egg nog. And while we are confessing things here… I had never expereinced homemade egg nog until two weeks ago. Again, I know, crazy! For some strange reason I had this preconceived notion that making egg nog from scratch was extremely difficult. Kind of like my fear of making crème brûlée. So when I was perusing the Egg Farmers of Canada website looking for some devilled egg inspiration I stumbled upon, what appeared to be, an insanely easy recipe for egg nog. So I tried it. It was soooo easy. And soooo tasty. And I’m sooooo crazy for not trying it earlier.
Holiday Cheer Egg Nog
You can add all kinds of flavours to this classic holiday drink. Try grating your own nutmeg, or adding brandy, rum, instant coffee, or even vanilla ice cream to this recipe.
Incredibly easy recipe by Egg Farmers of Canada
Ingredients
6 eggs
1/3 cup liquid honey or sugar
1/8 tsp salt
4 cups milk (1%), divided
1 tbsp vanilla extract
Spice Rum (optional)
Directions
1. Whisk eggs, honey and salt in large saucepan. Gradually add 2 cups (500 mL) milk. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until mixture coats back of spoon, 12 to 15 minutes. (Do not let mixture boil.)
2. Pour into large heatproof bowl; stir in remaining milk and vanilla. Place bowl in ice water, stirring frequently, until mixture is cool, about 15 minutes. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.
3. When ready to serve, whisk in flavouring (ie: cinnamon, nutmeg, rum, etc), if desired.
Cheers to a delicious homemade holiday!
I'm the opposite of you, Brittany. I loved eggnog as a kid and now…not so much. Maybe this easy recipe will convince me otherwise. Beautiful styling and photos as per usual.
