Going Au Naturel

Lately "J" has been on a real kick about going natural... like eating organic food, using natural cleaning products and even switching deodorant to a natural brand. I'm willing to slowly start making the switch when it comes to body care products and cosmetics, because let's face it, chemical ingredients you cannot pronounce are probably not good for your body.

We have already started trying out a few new products... Badger Balm Sunscreen, Live Clean Shampoo & Conditioner, and Dessert Essence Toothpaste. Also, back in July, "J" and I made our own bodywash and laundry detergent. "J" has been using the bodywash on a regular basis, whereas I have been using Consonant Organic Body Soap instead of the fragrance filled body washes I was previously using. I am feeling really good about these choices, and willing to take it further.

That said, I feel like I am going to have a very hard time. I've become accustom to certain products and their results... like make-up - it took me forever to find a mascara that I love.... I can't even imagine the disaster it's going to be to find a deodorant that works for me...

But I have done a lot of research, asked for your opinions, and even received a very kind tweet from John & Sherry at Young House Love regarding their experience going natural. Above products are some that I am willing to give a try in the coming months. Hopefully this process is not too painful!

Have you made the switch to natural products? What ones do you find work best?

  1. I am slowly doing this. I have been using Live Clean products for a couple years and love them. I just recently bought and started to use the natural deodorant - Kiss My Face, but am still undecided on it - it smells weird! haha

  2. I've tried switching to natural deodorants in lieu of antiperspirant, but I can't commit to them long term. The longest I've gone is about 4 weeks using the salt crystal one (can't remember the name), but I always felt sweaty and not fresh at all! :(

For shampoo though, I've completely stopped shampooing my hair. Your hair is straight so you may have a different experience, but I put 1 tbsp of baking soda into a squeeze bottle of warm water (you can get them from dollarama) then shake it up. I squirt that on my roots about once a week, massage my scalp, and rinse it out. Works great! I just rinse my hair the rest of the week. I've been using this method for 2 months now. Maybe I should devote a blog post to it because I really like the results!

  3. I've been doing the same! You're right though, some things are hard to switch just for "actually working" purposes. I use the Live Clean shampoo and conditioner, bare minerals makeup (which is awesome btw), burt bees honey & milk lotion, and a natural bodywash. I use Secret's Mineral deodorant, but it's not totally natural... i'm too nervous to attempt trying something else, lol. For face products – i'm still using Clinique, I tried other natural products, like burt bees and a canadian brand out of Vancouver (blanking on the name right now) but my skin ended up breaking out, and was too dry... it's a matter of trial and error I guess!

  4. Our daughter uses the Toms and we are happy with it.
As a biracial family we have to be careful of steroids and hormones in the products of their ethnicity and have had to choose more natural to keep them healthy!
